Is there facial emotion recognition software that registers the actual emotions of people instead of responding to grimaces?
I don't think that is necessary. Yes, you want to look for the difference to the situationally expected face, but you probably don't need to fudge your learning system to figure that out by itself.

Yes. My point has been to make sure the system is learning correctly. To make sure what is genuine and what is “postproduction “...Grimacing is something “built” upon existing emotions and I do believe there are minuets in expressions which get unchanged.
