Is there facial emotion recognition software that registers the actual emotions of people instead of responding to grimaces?
They may not have trained against ground truth in moving images. I you train against mugshots of people asked to make a sad or happy face, you get different results.

The main end user application of emotion recognition in images is getting a camera to snap when you grin. If the camera would only snap when you are truly happy, you might get very few selfies.

They provide some way for their customers to estimate ur emotional reaction to video ads (or something like that)

I would think training from video will indeed be much better. Actually I heard the CEO on a podcast this morning, ithink she was talking about using the laptop video camera (but that doesn't mean they are using the video and not just still pictures)
