Is there facial emotion recognition software that registers the actual emotions of people instead of responding to grimaces?
Whatever is correlated to the emotional state. I expect most of the interesting stuff happens at the derivatives, i.e. in the way the geometry changes.

I assumed that what they were doing, but I haven't looked into it in details.

They may not have trained against ground truth in moving images. I you train against mugshots of people asked to make a sad or happy face, you get different results.
