Empathy results from the (usually intrinsic) attention to the subcommunicative mental states of other people. Aspergers is often marked by a lack of intrinsic attention for them (but not for mental states in general).

I disagree. Empathy requires deep understanding. Physiological empathy is unintentional (if you see someone get hit, you flinch). But true understanding of a more nuanced mind state is far more likely within clearly signaling subgroups.

I think that deep empathy requires to intuitively understand the parts of the mental architecture that create things like group allegiances and signaling in the first place, so it has to go beyond and below that.

I like the word "attention", because it says that empathy can be either intentional or unintentional. Unintentional empathy comes naturally for most people and has upsides and downsides, but cultivating intentional empathy is one of the keys to success and happiness.
