There are people who have great capacity for abstract thought (including concepts like "you", "tomorrow" and "money") that lack self-awareness. Conversely, there are people with self-awareness that don't have much ability for abstract thinking.

If you look at it clearly, you will see that not all humans possess these abilities. For instance, look at children during different developmental phases, if you want to have a clear-cut argument.

A system is intelligent to the degree to which it is capable of making actionable models for arbitrary domains. A system is self aware if it is capable of making an actionable model of itself (i.e. its own regulation targets and the mechanisms that establish them).

The meaning of information is its relationship to change in other information. Instead of pattern recognition, I'd say function approximation.
