We don't just regulate our food intake and body temperature, but families, societies, cultures, and our trajectory through them. We are not just organisms, we are agents that act several levels of organization above them. That is why we have such a complex self.

There are people who have great capacity for abstract thought (including concepts like "you", "tomorrow" and "money") that lack self-awareness. Conversely, there are people with self-awareness that don't have much ability for abstract thinking.

If you look at it clearly, you will see that not all humans possess these abilities. For instance, look at children during different developmental phases, if you want to have a clear-cut argument.

Highly self aware people, and people that are capable of highly abstract thinking are rare exceptions, not the rule. Humans evolved to be a programmable species, to which self awareness and rationality are detrimental.
