The intuition that machines cannot be as ethical as humans is likely incorrect. Ethics is the systematic resolution of conflicts of interest under conditions of shared purpose. Ethics is not irrational. There is no reason to assume that machines cannot be more ethical than us.
You make that transition when you notice that the fairies that give king Arthus his sword are no longer ambassadors of the goodness and divine will of the universe itself, but simply support the form of governance and the governor they consider to be in their own best interest.
