Some people, like Christof Koch, think that a simulation cannot become conscious. The irony is that only simulations can be conscious. Consciousness is a simulated property of a simulated system.
A simulated apple can feed someone in the same simulation. Simulated water can make a simulated hand wet. Simulated information processing is the same as information processing, and simulated thoughts are thoughts.

This is our question though: what is the simulated water, hand, person, apple made of? Philosophically if you buy realism and physicalism then all there is is physical.

What do you think is the nature of the physical? Descartes thought it's all that can be mapped into the same 3space. We now see that space is not primary but emergent over certain operators. Physics is a causally closed description of the transitions of all information states.
