I appreciate the irony of my position but it always frustrates me when I'm told to think for myself without a particular proposition for which ideas to change. Should the way you arrive at an idea (if someone told you or no) have any bearing on whether the idea itself is correct?

Too pessimistic. Most people are too busy surviving and being consumed with parochial problems to develop robust ontological models for themselves, so they use rules of thumb and group confirmation heuristics. But people do change their minds when they see new ideas.
