The idea of "toxic masculinity", "toxic feminity", "toxic whiteness" etc. means "the way you are born is not acceptable and you need to be formed into something else". This is not a way to build a society. Don't privilege or punish identities, build shared purpose for all.

I disagree that these terms are always predicated on the way one is born and not on learned behavior by ones environment.

Agreed, I think Joscha misunderstands “toxic masculinity” etc. here, it is a learned behaviour, an over-indentification, a rigid interpretation of a fairly random set of identifiers, that should be seen in a fluid way. But of course, the final conclusion is a no-brainer.

No, that's not what these terms mean. At all.

I agree, but we don't get to define how people actually use terms and what effect that has.

“Tocix“ signifies an unhealthy over-identifocation with an arbitrary set of looks and behaviors, not the particular identity per se. It is used to show, that the identity (the place in society) you've been assigned at birth can become a prison, from whicht you *can* free yourself

I am not concerned about your interpretation, but the one by people that are believe that words mean what they say, and use it to stoke hatred between groups. You will not find it difficult to find evidence for that happening.

What I don't hear is how this constellation of behaviors functions and why it exists in the first place. It's anything but arbitrary. Toxic masculinity is a direct result of male disposability. Meaning men have historically done the dangerous work in society.

Yes, I think that indeed a lot of people feel that modern society has no more place and use for men, so the remaining men should be rounded up and either reeducated (into support roles: "allies") or failing that, ostracized. Not sure how that can work out.

When people say "toxic masculinity" they are referring to masculinity that goes overboard a la Tyler Durden. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td88z08a_4c …

There are quite a few people that say "toxic masculinity" to say that masculinity is toxic. Perhaps find a different word to express what you mean?
