As a rule, don't listen to anyone who tells you to "take pride in your work." Usually, that means "I want your sense of self-esteem to be dependent on the work you do for me", which is pretty much emotional manipulation in its barest form.
Work is purposeful mental or physical activity that is not directed on consumption, recreation or play.

It sounds like paid labor is a subset of "work". And I'm not sure how I would determine which parts of my unpaid, voluntary activity are not "recreation or play".

Anyway, I don't mean to nitpick at you. The only point of my comment was to say be wary of anyone who tells you to take pride in doing the thing they want you to do for them. It seems inherently manipulative.
