In 1972, James Lighthill was asked to write a confidential outside review on AI research in the UK in response to a funding proposal by Mitchie in Edinburgh, hated it and went all Gary Marcus on him. The review was leaked in 73 and led to a massive global setback in AI funding.

I think it only makes AI winter triggering even easier. If today these 3 folks figure out and declare that deep learning is a hoax (it kinda is), then tomorrow we all will be blockchain researchers ;)

Deep Learning is not a hoax. It also does not seems as if the current classes of compositional function approximators can carry us most of the way. I don’t think that most foundational AI researchers and their sponsors don’t know that.

Why do you think Brin and Page never talked in public in the last years? They basically own Google, Deepmind and Waymo and for some reason decided to be fully invisible.

Like expert systems, deep learning is just a wave. The question is whether someone funds AI all the way through even if the wave subsides. The current tech leaders grew up believing in AI.
