Some of the best people I know come from very unfortunate circumstances. To build something good in yourself, you usually have to be in need of building something good. Don't underestimate the value of your difficulty and pain. The value manifests as you resolve it.

Wise words, as ever. I would say two things: 1) Building something 'good' in yourself is like painting the Humber bridge. It requires ongoing maintenance; 2). Individuals are part of families & wider groups. Building something good in yourself can't be a solitary activity.

The issue with difficult circumstances is that they are usually caused by problems in your family and wider groups. Thus, intact families and communities may tend to liberate you from the need to build the good thing, because your needs are already met.

One of the good things you may learn is how to discover truth under adversarial circumstances. How to understand and accept yourself and others. How to find or build and maintain friendships, relationships and communities. How to properly perceive and heal others.
