An attitude is a set of fixed properties in which I identify myself in my relationship to the world. Attitudes are replacing abolute measurements with relative ones. They are now compared with the target values of our baselines. Changing an attitude also means changing myself.

An attitude can also be seen as a flexible response to circumstances presented by the world. Why does it have to be fixed? This is true for many people but not for everyone.

You are absolutely correct. The German word for attitude is "Einstellung" (meaning adjustment, tuning, configuration, alignment). But it is not me who is doing the adjustment, I am the product of the adjustments.
