Innumerate journalists need to stop talking about AI. https://buff.ly/2x60fTU Why this journalist is dumb: the only way to prevent disparate impact (what journalists call "bias) is to use double standards. An AI can't have double standards without knowing ethnicity.

Nah, its just the standard trope of “why worry about global extinction like some stupid nerd when you can worry about algorithmic bias like all the cool kids”

Algo bias is a useful toy problem to solve on the way to true ai alignment. Unfortunately most of the research on the topic doesnt approach it that way, and instead turns it into mathwashing affirmative action.

I think that there is a deep conceptual rift hidden below the idea of algorithmic bias. Is the world a physical construct or a social construct? I suspect that ultimately, algorithmic bias comes down exactly to the divergence between the physical and the social construct.

It is true that the world has a certain publication bias. But we already know that and our models account for it, because we can infer it from the distribution of the published results.

Successfully falsifying data comes down to fabricating a single piece of evidence that can swing an observer into a consistent and convincing parallel universe that somehow retains the other known observables. The more observables exist, the harder this will become.
