#PhytochemicalFriday, be thankful for processing that removes alkaloids (like the pyrrolizidine ester amabiline) from apparently hangover-curing borage oil. Far from amable, amabiline is toxic to the liver and is one of several Boraginales alkaloids that can kill Amoebozoa.pic.twitter.com/lGuRdDe97R

Psoralen - a naturally-occurring compound in fig leaves, celery, & parsley (among others) - is a flat molecule capable of squeezing into the DNA double helix and impeding DNA replication. It appears to be responsible for fig leaf photodermatitis.

Scientists have known that our gut can send signals to the brain through our bloodstream to say, for example, that we're full. A study from last year, though, showed that there's a more direct line of communication.

#PhytochemicalFriday! Today: dicoumarol - a compound of combined plant and fungal origin originally discovered in 1940 by studying spoiled sweet clover hay that caused uncontrollable and fatal hemorrhaging in livestock. It has since inspired synthetic anticoagulant rodenticides.pic.twitter.com/tuBRcznFIO

Human hormones (and hormon-like substances) are found more and more often in the environment. They come from plastics as well as human waste. Now, researchers developed plants that can sense androgens and can serve as a biodetector for these substances. https://plantsandpipettes.com/boy-hormones-make-plants-pink/ …pic.twitter.com/izf20rBKNV
