A lot of folks don’t realize it but NPWRD was originally a pagan tradition we inherited from the Romans to celebrate the god of form filling out Originally in winter before - it was moved to late fall when the Emperor Tiberius added his own 60 day month to the end of the year

When Tiberius croaked, Caligula trashed his uncle’s old month but kept the holiday in September as most forms were paper back then and it was a bummer to do it in winter Arguably the high point of Caligula’s reign after the whole horse senator thing

And of course the holiday has grown to incorporate traditions from other cultures - the Tannenboar (“clipboard” in Old German) became associated with the holiday during the carolingian renaissance

The holiday hasn’t always been as widespread as it is today - in fact early pilgrims in the Massachusetts Bay Colonies banned the holiday As strict Calvinists they believed if you were predestined to be a poll worker you’d just show up on Election Day, no signup needed

Nevertheless the holiday spread across our new nation - buoyed by the time honored traditions we’ve all grown up with and love dearly • Signing up at https://PowerThePolls.org/Pizza • And with your local election official • Attending the traditional zoom town hall
