I think it is fair to say that video games have had a huge impact on every nerd* born in the last half of the 20th century (*a group that I proudly claim to be a part of). I was just one of the lucky few who got to enjoy both making and playing them.
Being a nerdy programmer kid, seeing your name printed on the packaging was the pinnacle. "David Crane's Pitfall II", "Garry Kitchen's Game Maker", etc. Infocom, whose games I played a lot in those early days were also good to authors in that respect.
