I believe this is largely because on game systems incapable of detailed graphics we had to concentrate on making the game playing experience fun and challenging. The games we did back then contained many innovations that have found their way into modern gaming.
As for Pitfall, I am especially proud that both Pitfall and Pitfall II were included in a recent display in the Smithsonian. And 40 years later, after more than a million video games had been published, Pitfall was still on a list of the top 100 games of all time (at #99 
).
Congrats for achieving the High Score Patch score. But if you want a patch you will have to pry one out of the hands of a collector - they are prized today. Activision CEO Jim Levy had the idea to give out those patches. And you thought Microsoft invented the "Achievement".
Good luck with your project and career in video games. It is not about playing games all day, and is in fact one of the more challenging fields of endeavor. But as Mark Twain said, “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
