Why in 2020 do we still have gender on a passport? Passports used to include details such as hight and eye colour etc. All now unnecessary and so much more valuable and helpful data is included in a modern passport

Because of ICAO rules. Otherwise, yes, the best thing to do would just be to remove the marker altogether. At some point in the future ICAO may go that way.

Feel the need to point out a slight inaccuracy in this article. The X gender marker on passports isn't necessarily gender-neutral. It depends on national context - e.g. in Pakistan and India, the X marker is for use by hijra, who are a recognised third gender.

Under the ICAO regulations, "X" means "unspecified". It's up to individual countries to decide the eligibility for an X marker. So while in Pakistan and India "X" means "hijra", in New Zealand "X" means "gender diverse".
