I feel like this is a distressingly common thing for people who grew up in overwhelmingly cishet, WASPy situations. I know as a child it was a long time before I even learned that gay people exist, and far longer before I learned that transgender people exist.

(and by that token, it was way, way longer even before I was able to really accept the fact that I myself am trans. When you grow up with a certain mindset instilled in you, it's hard to really wrestle with your actual identity being at odds with that.)
