Bugs me how I've used 'they' as a singular pronoun since I was 19 (for 28 years) to 'cover' my tracks when speaking about 'my partner' to work colleagues etc. Since getting more confident about myself I switched to 'he' with certain people I trust. It's not a new thing.

I use to loop myself into a pretzel
trying to avoid saying “she”, to my coworkers when talking about my gf. They was my go to word too, unless I went with their assumptions & used “he”.

I love language - but on this, words fail me. I suppose the decade was marked by division, polarisation and the amplified voice of the few, so in that sense I guess it's an appropriate choice.
