The missing piece for me is whether the anti-LGBT customer was signaling their beliefs in some way or if the employee was just aware of who that person was? If she was verbally abusing the employee then this is clearly not ok.

It's a business open to the public & you have to act professional. Never let someone that hates you get under your skin to the point where you put your employment at risk. The anti LGBT Woman probably laughed herself silly when she found out what happened.
