When I see the words ‘non-binary’ and ‘genderqueer’ and I hear people saying these things, I'm like ‘F**k, what the hell does that mean? I don't fit in those boxes. I'm anglophone.'

Third and more non-binary genders have existed globally for thousands of years, just not in the Christian(&other Abrahamic religion's) modern culture. Singular they in pronoun usage has been used since Chaucer.

Except the entire article repeatedly refers to Sam as "he" rather than "they." They're non-binary, meaning unless they specified being okay with masculine pronouns, you shouldn't force masculine pronouns on them. Misgendering isn't okay...

Needing to become non binary to be approved to express ones self just reinforces that male and female gender roles are set in stone.

Third and more genders have existed in cultures around the world for thousands of years of documented history, as have third sexes. The binary gender roles you refer to are exclusive to our culture & their roles vary globally. Erasure of non-binary genders is ethnocentric.
