It is on record how close and irreverent to each other the Pythons were and still are. I don't believe that Graham Chapman would have taken offence, and therefore neither should "we". In exactly the same way that black friends will use the 'n' word within their own circles...

Yes age is no excuse but the issue is that Cleese’s words weren’t a slur in the context of the whole interview. Inadvisable, yes, but he knew exactly what he was doing when he said them.

Very true--There is a certain age group that people think it is OK to be homophobic and indeed Racist--usually white men who did national service or who grew up in The 1950s.
