Q. What is the process for changing my gender marker to X for non-binary? A. The process will eventually be the same as any other gender marker change. The BMV's software doesn't support gender markers other than 'M' or 'F.' For now, if you change your gender marker to X (1/2)

...your Gender Designation Form will be sent to Augusta, & they will send back an 'X' sticker to put on the *back* of your Maine license or ID. State law doesn't allow alterations to the front of an ID - this is why the sticker must be placed on the back of the ID. (2/2)

The BMV will be working on changing their system to support 'X' as a gender marker - they will have a solution no later than July, 2019. When their system is fixed, you will be issued a new license with your correct gender marker printed on the front.
