Hardware had become so good that the job of obsolescence had been relegated to software. They normalized defects AND the "solution" of constantly pushed patches, which means your phone, your TV, your light bulbs, need to be upgraded every two or three years, to run the latest!

Is it a conspiracy? No. Is it even planned? No. Like so many of these things the path of most profit simply emerged. Other, less profitable ideas, just kind of died out from lack of attention, and the current terrible system arose because there was no compelling case to not.
