What if—I’m just spitballing here—we rezoned SF and the Valley for tons of new housing, and built a world class transit system for both by taxing tech companies who use the city as a bedroom community?

Valencia St is zoned for eight story buildings. Talking about SF zoning is playing checkers while anti-housing landlords play chess.

the Mission is one of the few areas in the city actually zoned for more height, the big prizes are the Sunset, West Portal, Forest Hill, and the Richmond

If you're referring to SF Honda, I'm pretty sure they've sold to developers already

What about the tiny donut shop across the street, and the Goodwill? Those should all be 20 story residential towers

I agree! But I also think that apartment buildings should be legal to build on the west side. You can house many more people in neighborhoods full of 4-5 story buildings than in a couple of 20-story towers here and there.

I am a building radical. I don't understand why Sausalito is not packed with skyscrapers. Build everywhere in SF (with lavish infrastructure to match)

Then let me share an infuriating image: https://goo.gl/maps/Rr5hTpBwwEJ2 … This is an 8-minute walk from West Portal station, which is a 15-minute fully underground ride from downtown. It looks like that because it's zoned for detached single family homes only.

People talk about the suburbs as if they're different from SF, but much of SF *is* a suburb. One of the biggest problems IMO is single-family zoning.
