You are actually arguing for a Finnish style safety net, not UBI

You’re making a great case for trying the proven Finnish approach as that social experiment.

There was a lot of discussion whether the scope was broad enough (only unemployed) and now many would’ve liked to continue beyond the 2 years to see better results. It was always going to be a compromise, but we’ll have to see what kind of results they got.

I look forward to seeing them too. It is odd that they limited it to the unemployed, given the premise

Probably would’ve been too expensive for the politicians beyond that. Trying to find solutions for the unemployed can be considered nearly free since the state would pay in any case.

It began on 1.1.2007 and runs for two years. 2000 unemployed, aged 25-58, receives 560€ monthly. It closely matches the current unemployment benefit. With this in mind, the UBI results due to be released in 2019 are maybe not as universal as some assume, but more unemp. related

The objectives included: how to change the social welfare to better adapt to changes in the work life, to make the social welfare include more participation & encouraging elements (to not penalize for helping oneself). Finally to reduce bureaucracy and to simplify the sw system.

Was this experiment a big political issue in Finland, or a minor initiative?

Many have been enthusiastic. Popular subject. The amount of foreign interest wasn’t anticipated. Like the last BBC’s story about ending the trial, which didn’t happen. It’s running the time that was originally agreed upon. Some social scientists did want to expand it beyond that
