Why is black pepper, of all things, the one standard spice served with salt? RULES: You have to KNOW to answer. I can make nerd guesses too, so don't peppersplain to me unless you know pepper TRUTH.

This is not an answer at all, but when I was growing up with super hippie parents (of the John Jeavons/biointensive gardening type), our table also had two shakers: Vegit, and powdered dulse seaweed.
