Why is black pepper, of all things, the one standard spice served with salt? RULES: You have to KNOW to answer. I can make nerd guesses too, so don't peppersplain to me unless you know pepper TRUTH.

I can’t remember where exactly, but I once read that mustard was an extremely common third accompaniment to salt and pepper until relatively late.

Folk French restaurants all feature mustard on the standard table, along with salt & pepper... And bread - now that I think of it, bread is a condiment too !
