The "top two" primary system in California is the perfect excuse to indulge the Democratic Party's insitutional dislike of contested primaries. They feel about primary elections like the Victorians felt about exercise—that it drains and depletes energy not easily recovered.

If you don't have time to follow the twists and turns of Democratic politics this spring, I believe a good heuristic for winning is to do the opposite of whatever party leadership is pushing for.

There are lots of candidates with sound positions who are not good candidates for other reasons (trouble with public speaking, poor judgement, poor managers). It's not so easy to gauge people remotely
