I spent two weeks traveling in Japan with my elderly mom, who has a little trouble with stairs. Every elevator at every subway station was functional. None of them smelled like urine. Each station had a working bathroom. I would like to see this in the Bay Area before I die.

This is my favorite answer for why our basic public services don't work. It has nothing to do with priorities, spending, and not gutting the public sector. Instead it's some Orientalist bullshit.

I'm familiar with this spectrum, but I react angrily because it has been used as an excuse for not investing in the public sector in the US. The reason people pee in elevators in San Francisco, for example, is that there are almost no public toilets, and rampant homelessness
