OK, got one: urban streets without pavements/sidewalks scared me at first, but they appear to work rather well in Japan. Cars seem to drive very carefully and assume there are pedestrians nearby, kids can walk, ride bikes etc.
And the fact that young kids can play outside, and travel around cities alone or in small groups, walking, riding bikes, or using public transport, seems like good sign of general civic health. Some Japanese cities are very intense but they aren't hostile.
