I spent two weeks traveling in Japan with my elderly mom, who has a little trouble with stairs. Every elevator at every subway station was functional. None of them smelled like urine. Each station had a working bathroom. I would like to see this in the Bay Area before I die.

Sounds like SF needs a dedicated subway system for tech folks.

But once we invent general AI we won’t need to solve any of these problems! (2028: the AI is turned on and says “Do what the Japanese are doing.”)

I think the point is that a urine free BART means the people of the city are supported enough with homes and access to bathrooms that they don’t feel the need to use a train station for that purpose. The people of PR deserve the same basic human decency and good social systems.

The people who design and run the Tokyo subway system aren't the kind of people who urinate on trains, either. What they are is people who can demonstrably make life better with technology on a city scale. I ask that same kind of proof from our big bold dreamers.
