The only criticisms of Japanese public spaces I can offer after many visits: there are almost no garbage cans, you don't need so many men with light sabers to direct traffic, and the ridgy lines in the sidewalks for the visually impaired (!!) are too prominent and impair walking.

From what we could figure out, the garbage cans thing is intentional. It encourages actively thinking about the fact you'll have to dispose of your garbage. Certainly Japanese cities are extremely clean by US standards.

I certainly benefit from the garbage mindfulness, but pine in my heart for the giant American trash pits

The men with light sabers are often given tasks to maintain their dignity (as opposed to sitting at home unemployed) so I will cut them a break. The rest, yes.

I noticed they are mostly elderly. If that's the reason, then may they saber on in peace.

Truuu I didn’t figure out that you’re supposed to just drink the coffee at the vending machine and throw it out for far too long

I believe Tokyo had a larger number of trash cans before the subway gas attack in the 90s.

That there were no garbage cans, but also almost no litter, blew my mind
