To anyone working a tech job at ICE I want to say: unless you're ideologically committed to this project, you can make way more money profiling, tracking and surveilling innocent people in the private sector.

I'm withholding judgement about Github until we learn the facts. But there is a worrying pattern in the tech industry where companies grow big enough to play by Washington rules, and then begin to act wildly out of step with their former values.

I've tweeted about how Facebook and Google donate thousands to homophobic an women-hating politicians. They've also lobbied hard (and successfully) to strip ISP privacy protections, and Google at least is working closely with the Pentagon. Dropbox put Condi Rice on its board.

These are all areas where internal employee pressure can have an effect, but you have to go the extra mile to find out what your company's lobbying arm is trying to hide from you, and you have to act together rather than in solitary protest.
