Sam Altman has done enough damage in this world without introducing super kudzu.
http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/07/climate-change-earth-too-hot-for-humans.html … If super kudzu worries you, you aren't scared enough yet. We're dealing with an entirely different scale of problem.
I am probably more scared than Altman. But I think high-risk decisions that affect the entire planet should be taken collectively, rather than at the personal whim of a Silicon Valley millionaire.
Developing the tech is worth the risk, and hopefully like any responsible biotech outfit they would take appropriate quarantine precautions. Someone needs to build the tools, and we don't have time to wait. Waiting for international consensus is how we got here.
It's simply possible that—hear me out—creating a superstrain of fast-growing weed as a personal pet project could create more problems than it solves. There needs to be more accountability around it than Altman has historically been comfortable with.
We are currently totally transforming the world, but doing it by accident. I'm more scared of that than a handful of people attempting to take responsibility for this power, and using it deliberately rather than accidentally.
Sounds like we have a genuine disagreement on the merits of this question!
