And it's not that people don't understand it because they're dumb, or ignorant. Facebook and Google both go to great lengths to never discuss their business model, or its externalities.

1) Custom Audiences feature wasn’t available when Obama ran allowing very specific retargeting based what gets reactions at individual level. 2) AFAIK Obama campaign did not misrepresent itself or lie about purpose. This doesn’t mean Obama/FB operation was OK but not the same.
