Long before facebook, people would happily forward chain emails to their entire address book, who would then forward it on in turn. The weaponization of social media is new, but the basic behaviors, and the ability to exploit them are as old as the internet.

Alex's potluck metaphor in reply seemed accurate to me, a corporate drone. FB gets to choose which of your friends' posts to show. FB has other ways to influence too, but that core mechanic has most impact. Not a million miles from Zeynep's "shaping" descriptor.

I've started nursing this theory: At its heart, Facebook is to old school internet forums as Google is to Yahoo. It automates away the work of browsing and finding like-minded people to talk to.
