Then let them stay on FB. I have not had FB since 2015 (after their manip. timeline study), & have not missed it. I call or text/email people, or meet in person. People did that for years & survived. There are plenty of graves of companies that couldn't be done without.

I wish we would see some standardized, provider-independent chat protocol (ie, XMPP) come to prominence to replace all of this crap

Those things aren't contradictory. Facebook can be bad and still hard to quit. Like alcohol and tobacco. I agree that the solution isn't just asking people to quit. It's regulation. At this point government involvement isn't "stifling innovation", but holding a giant accountable.
