Warmest thanks to the @edwardsforpa campaign for letting me shadow them today across central Pennsylvania, as we went to the DACA rally in Harrisburgpic.twitter.com/TC9wN8gJDw

I'd like to tweet for a moment not about Greg Edwards, but his opponent in this district, John Morganelli. In many ways, Morganelli is a typical Republican. He's a former prosecutor, pro-life, staunch opponent of immigration, and has praised Trump's expansion of ICE

Soon after Trump was elected, Morganelli posted a series of obsequious tweets (since deleted) angling for a job, any job, in the new administration.pic.twitter.com/l3ifZqH3uM

Morganelli has run four times for Attorney General (and lost), and in 2016 he campaigned for Republican Senator Pat Toomey, so he enjoys wide name recognition and a good fundraising network.

Really the only problem with Morganelli's campaign is that he's not a Republican, but a Democrat. And the DCCC seems to be going to bat for him.

If I told you the national party had come into this race trying to clear the field by pushing out a candidate, Morganelli would be the obvious choice. This is not the year to send an immigration-hating Trump admirer to Congress. That's what we have the Republican party for.

Before redistricting last month, Morganelli argued that only a right-wing Democrat stood a chance in a district that leaned Republican. But even if you believed that argument, it no longer holds after redistricting. PA-7 is now a solid blue, 25% black district.

So what's about to happen is the Democrats are going to run a more effective Republican candidate in a blue district than their Republican opponents could muster. This despite having an opportunity to sweep the ticket there thanks to an energized progressive vote

Now, I'm a political novice, but it seems like in a watershed year, in a Democratic district, it may be worth trying to run a candidate who represents actual Democratic values.

At some point, the (D) next to your name has to mean something. Otherwise the party will start fielding insipid candidates, lose election after election, abandon whole districts, and become a rudderless, insipid group with no greater goal than enriching itself

We can't afford such small-mindedness; not in this watershed political year. So let's interpret the Democratic Party as damage, and go around it. .
