Growing up in California, site of the 1850’s Gold Rush, I was told constantly that “the most successful people during the gold rush just sold shovels.” Very common saying. I even went on trips to mining camps and panned for gold. It’s incredible to see this play out as an adult.https://twitter.com/bascule/status/967214239755657216 …

Fun fact: You can still pan for gold in the hills of California and find flakes, but it’s not profitable. I did it as a kid and brought home a few specks. It’s really literally THE defining event in California history, so it’s taught extensively.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Gold_Rush …

The California Gold Rush was right at the pinnacle of completely unchecked industrialized wilderness pillaging during the mid/late 1800’s, it seriously fucked up huge portions of the state, but I don’t recall the lingering impacts.

A disproportionate amount of American history is the abject destruction of a virgin continent, cleared by pandemic, genocide and violent requisition, during a historical quirk while humans acclimated to their ability to industrialize pillaging of Earth with unbounded capital.

Many people point to books such as ‘The Jungle’ but I think of the oil fields in Texas in the first half of the 1900’s, as mechanization matured. It’s the description of literal hell. https://texasalmanac.com/topics/business/oil-and-texas-cultural-history …

Definitely something I regret growing up is not maintaining my http://del.icio.us bookmarking account. Knowledge is so diffuse on the net and you lose track of the best sources of things you’ve learned. A decade or more later you’ll know you read something, but can’t cite it
