Growing up in California, site of the 1850’s Gold Rush, I was told constantly that “the most successful people during the gold rush just sold shovels.” Very common saying. The Monterey fishery did not collapse due to overfishing, but because there's a natural and irregular long-term cycle in sardine vs. anchovy populations.

I like this story because it's kind of unsatisfying to everyone. Should be a morality tale about overfishing, but it turns out that it's natural cycle, but then it turns out it's very sensitive to climate, and exacerbated by the overfishing...
