There is no one with more leverage over the large tech companies than their workforce. In fact, they're the only ones with leverage! But they have proven unwilling to channel their obvious appetite for change into meaningful action.

which googlers do you mean? i can assure you that the ones i know would certainly like to make the company better serve the world. but can you blame them for feeling that they have no leverage when they are fired for even suggesting it?

Google as workplace is important too. Your focus on product is good. Workers who aren’t scared to be who they are will have more influence on those decisions.

No, they won't. The culture of deference to project managers there is bone deep. Workplace diversity is an absolute good in itself, but using it to improve product decisions requires a willingness to take power rather than wait to be given permission
