wouldn't it make sense so others cannot read your email? I don't think it's to stop facebook from knowing things, but to stop others from snooping on the messages facebook sends you. some messages contain content.

My experience with notifications is that they just require you to log in to FB to see the substance. Do you remember which messages contain substantive content?

I tried it once. I think it only makes sense if you trust your email provider even less than you trust FB. Maybe that's true for some users (like those using a work email address? or something government-sponsored?), but not for most.
