Facebook people, can you explain the context in which this security feature makes sense? Site that tracks everything about you will send encrypted email to tell you to log in to see a new message...pic.twitter.com/lH7QOfhQs5

wouldn't it make sense so others cannot read your email? I don't think it's to stop facebook from knowing things, but to stop others from snooping on the messages facebook sends you. some messages contain content.

My experience with notifications is that they just require you to log in to FB to see the substance. Do you remember which messages contain substantive content?

I tried it once. I think it only makes sense if you trust your email provider even less than you trust FB. Maybe that's true for some users (like those using a work email address? or something government-sponsored?), but not for most.

Hi! I was the kinda-product-manager for this — the geniuses behind it were Jon, Steve and Zac and I'll let them "out" themselves if they choose — but seeing as I left 18 months ago, I can explain it, sure! (cont…)

tl;dr — 1) Facebook genuinely care about security and privacy, you may this is bonkers, but they do. 2) PGP is cool, and FB recognise this. 3) Enabling PGP encryption for email enables an end-to-end-secure (strictly: server-to-eyeballs-secure) means of communication. (cont…)

I believe it was a summer intern project. In theory it’d be nice for some FB notifications, but what does @mattblaze say about PGP “usability” again?
