The candidates on the Great Slate (and many others!) are testing a different theory of victory, where you build up a campaign operation on the ground, a year out from the election, and bust your ass canvassing and mobilizing voters rather than sending them ads.

In an election where so many feel alienated from the political system (over 40% of Americans didn't vote in 2016!), this seems like an experiment worth trying. But as it takes money away from the consultant class, they bitterly oppose it.
