I do remember hearing that the Gros Michel tasted better. therefore whatever substitute we get will inevitably be more bland.

Yes, but it's complicated. Caribbean island Cavendishes taste better than mainland ones but Chiquita and Dole rule the US market. And industrial banana cultivation is mostly terrible.
