I was a little annoyed iPhone X defaulted to not showing the content of texts on lock screen until it recognized my face, but I came to see how it is a fair tradeoff to avoid such situations

It’s not Google’s fault, it’s Mozilla. The Firefox team is working on U2F support. Meanwhile, use Chrome for Gmail.
