Believe it or not, the hardware price isn't that crazy. Assuming that built a truly high-end door lock, it's expensive but not outrageous. The problem is that they are not user installabe -- requiring as much or more to spent on a locksmith.

In order to be successful, these types of products must be sold for new construction which takes a large dealer network and lots time/money. It seems they underestimated this market dynamic.
